The 5G4LIVES European project is a significant technological and social innovation initiative, implemented in two strategic geographical clusters (Latvia and Italy). It harnesses 5G connectivity and innovative technologies such as drones (UAVs) and hydrogen power to improve public safety and environmental health.
The project aims to optimize emergency management and data-driven risk prediction through the automated analysis of vulnerabilities in high-risk areas and real-time situational assessment of a given area.
In particular, in Turin, the partners are developing a real-time situational awareness and vulnerability assessment service to mitigate risks in the hillside area. This is achieved using data collected from sensors and live video feeds from cameras mounted on BVLOS drones, all leveraging the potential of the 5G network.
The use of these tools is also supported by improved mission planning, command and control, and real-time vehicle tracking.
Two Days of Work in Turin
Earlier this year, the 5G4LIVES project team gathered in Turin at CTE-Next for two days dedicated to innovation in 5G and urban air mobility.
These two days provided a unique opportunity to assess the project’s progress, share experiences, and look toward the future of technologies capable of saving human lives.
The event concluded with the webinar “The Future of UAVs in Piemonte and Turin”, now available on the Torino City Lab YouTube channel.
Day 1 | 5G4LIVES General Assembly
After an overview of the innovation ecosystem of the City of Turin, European Capital of Innovation 2024–2025, an update was provided on the project’s progress, with a particular focus on achievements and future goals.
Key topics included:
-
Preparation of test flight areas for 5G-enabled UAVs for search and rescue operations
-
Work carried out by command and control centers for first responders in Riga and Turin
-
The importance of creating test areas and sandboxes across Europe to promote stronger transnational cooperation
The day concluded with networking moments and the exchange of ideas among participants.
