The Smart City Expo in Barcelona is the most important European event on urban innovation, and each year it brings together over 25,000 leaders from global businesses, government entities, organizations, and more than 850 municipalities to discuss the most innovative solutions for the cities of the future. The goal of the congress is to globalize urban innovation and provide cities with policies and solutions to address the challenges of their territories in the name of sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity.
This year, from November 5th to 7th, the City of Turin will also be present, in particular Elena Deambrogio, head of the Smart City and European Projects Office of the City of Turin, Torino City Lab, and all the initiatives it encompasses.
In her speech, she will present our city as a start-up city, starting from the model of the House of Emerging Technologies (CTE Next) – the center for technology transfer and experimentation – showing how municipalities can stimulate urban innovation by acting as facilitators and providing digital infrastructures, ecosystem services, and networking opportunities.
The Municipality of Turin has successfully managed a comprehensive innovation system that has attracted the attention and participation of various stakeholders. This system has been crucial in promoting the growth of start-ups and businesses, as well as in developing and testing innovative solutions to address societal challenges. Through initiatives like CTE NEXT, the city of Turin has transformed into a hub for distributed technology transfer. This means that Turin has become a focal point for the dissemination of knowledge and expertise in emerging technologies such as IoT, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, and Blockchain. These technologies are strategically applied in sectors like Smart Mobility, Industry 4.0, and Innovative Urban Services to drive economic growth and the innovation process of society.
In three years, CTE NEXT has developed an active community of over 600 companies, providing technology needs scouting to more than 250 companies, both Italian and international, and offering specialized services (among the 63 available in the catalog) to over 100 startups and SMEs.
With the Urban Testing and Acceleration programs, it was possible to experiment with 35 concrete use cases, promoting access to funding and technological infrastructures, as well as to training, networking, and scaling activities. More than 12 Calls for applications were launched to select the most deserving companies or groups of aspiring entrepreneurs in the field of emerging technologies applied to urban living, with approximately €1,300,000 allocated to support these companies.
Elena Deambrogio, representing Torino City Lab, will also participate as a speaker at the 2024 edition of the Tomorrow.Mobility World Congress.
The Agora session titled “Cities as Mobility Innovation Labs” is curated by EIT Urban Mobility and will take place on Tuesday, November 5, from 12:45 to 13:30. The session will be held in the format of a roundtable discussion, moderated among city representatives.
The event aims to provide a forum where urban mobility leaders from all sectors and regions can explore innovative solutions, draw inspiration, share knowledge, and collaborate towards a future of smarter, healthier, and more livable cities.
The Tomorrow.Mobility World Congress will take place alongside the Smart City Expo World Congress, the leading international event for urban innovation, and the Tomorrow.Building World Congress, an emerging event focused on the green and digital transition of buildings and urban infrastructures.
